Welcome to the Northern California unit of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI). The NorCal Airstream Club is a group of people who own Airstreams, love to travel and have fun. Most of our members are from Northern California, including San Joaquin, the North Coast, Sierras, Sacramento Valley and San Francisco Bay area.
NorCal is large enough to support a great program of rallies and caravans, yet small enough that members easily establish life-long friendships. We tend to be retired or near retirement, although we have seen a recent increase in new members in mid-career. This group has diverse interests including ham radio, fishing, bicycling, quilting, art and history. An underlying theme is the Airstream lifestyle so there is regular chatter about trailer ambiance, maintenance, repair and towing skills. We host a minimum of eight unit rallies a year, mostly in Northern and Central California with an occasional foray into Nevada. Read more…
Norcal Airstreamers held their annual Christmas rally at Jackson Rancheria RV Park. The main event was the installation of new officers. The past president, Brian, and his first lady, Juliet, were honored for their service. There were many activities: a seminar on maintenance issues, a tea party complete with with sassy hats and an open house at the “Biggest Little Kitchen Store”. The good food kept on coming. We enjoyed two catered dinners, two breakfasts and a never-ending supply of cookies.
The highlight of this rally was a silent auction. We raised over $2000 (The total was updated after the picture was taken) for the victims of the local Butte Wildfire. All photos by Bob V.
Bodega Bay Rally
Bud and Planes at Vacaville Rally
The NorCal Airstream club rallied at McCloud Dance Country RV Park September 2-8. The campground was nestled at the base of Mt. Shasta. The group visited Burney Falls in beautiful McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Burney Creek originates in underground springs and flows to the falls, dropping 129-feet into a mist-filled basin.
NorCal, SNU Rally Together
NorCal and the Sierra-Nevada Unit got together August 5-9 for a combined rally at Prosser Family Campground near Truckee, CA. Twenty Airstreams took over most of the campground for a dry-camping experience. Photos from the Sierra-Nevada Facebook page by Don Williams.
Clio “Flash” Rally
The rally at Clio’s Rivers Edge RV Park near Graeagle, CA in July was the unit’s first experimental “flash rally.” The purpose is to increase opportunities for members to gather and enjoy activities. About 15 members were able to participate on short notice. Flash rallies could be used for something fairly traditional, such as the Clio rally, which was an RV camping event proposed on short notice. They could also be centered on a non- camping activity, e.g., a dinner and concert; an Amtrak trip; a balloon festival; a kayak outing; etc. Typically, Flash Rallies have the following characteristics: Called on short notice; proposed, organized and run by any NorCal member(s); approved by the board; publicized by email to the NorCal membership and open to any WBCCI member; an addition to regular rally and caravan planning, not a replacement event, and not NorCal funded. Financing and reservations (if required) are handled by the participants without involvement of the treasurer or registrar.
WBCCI Int’l Rally
Nature Calls to Oakhurst Rally
The NorCal Airstream Club rally at Oakhurst brought campers to the gates of majestic Yosemite National Park. The rally at Sierra RV Park June 3-7 was 17 miles from the south gate to Yosemite. The campground was within 30 feet of an active family of beavers who carried out their lumberjack duties uninhibited by the aluminum settlement.
Hosts for the rally were John and Elain W., Carol R. and Don W. Don’s Bass Lake home was the site of the welcome dinner. The dinner theme was the 70s and people dressed in tie-dye shirts, head-bands, beads, and peace-sign necklaces.
John and Don also cooked their famous pancake breakfast for the campers.
The campers went to the performance of a melodrama at the Golden Chain Theatre.
“As expected, the audience was encouraged to participate by cheering, booing, hissing, and calling out to the actors during ‘Bertha, the Beautiful Typewriter Girl’.”
It was a lot of fun for everyone, including the cast.” June 2015. Photos from Bob V., Tom S., Claudette P.
Next: August 5-9 at Prosser Family Campground near Truckee.
Grass Valley Rally
The NorCal WBCCI Airstream Club had 31 rigs for the rally at the Nevada County Fairground in Grass Valley, CA.
Next Rally: June 3-7 Oakhurst-Yosemite National Park and Bass Lake rally.
Several NorCal members attended the 2015 inaugural Region 12 Cali-Rally at Camatta Ranch near Santa Margarita, CA. More than 60 Airstreamers had perfect spring weather for this dry-camping rally. Several NorCal members pitched in to help Region 12 organize the rally. Tom and Hedda took on the morning breakfast and coffee chores. Brian and Juliet ran the chili cook-off. It was one of the best tasting chili cook-offs that I’ve attended (we should ask Marcia to serve her white chili at a rally). Juliet led the early morning exercisers in yoga despite some pesky little flying bugs that disturbed our karma. Affiliates Judy and Ken were heavily involved in getting the party organized. Salad Bowl Rally
The NorCal Airstream Club gathered at Betabel RV Campground near San Juan Bautista for the “salad bowl rally.” The group had sunny days with cool evenings. The first full day of the rally was spent exploring San Juan Bautista and the old mission. Several of the Airstreamers also spent part of their day at nearby Santa Cruz or Carmel. The second day of the rally was spent in Gilroy, which has an expansive discount shopping mall. The hosts, Pat, Barry and Claudia prepared several meals, including strawberry shortcake. April 2015
Next: April 29-May 3 rally at Nevada County Fairgrounds at Grass Valley.
The March rally was held March 4-8 at the highly-rated and new Yanks RV Resort in Greenfield, CA. The first full day of activities included a visit to Pinnacles National Park, which has a rugged and scenic volcanic field. On Friday the group went to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. It is a museum devoted to author John Steinbeck. Steinbeck wrote one of the classic American travel novels, “Travels with Charley.” Charley was Steinbeck’s dog and the two of them boondocked around the country in a pickup truck camper in 1960. Pictures show hiking at Pinnacles National Park and climbing through a tunnel within the park, a visit to the Steinbeck Center, wine tasting, and a views of our Airstreams at the park. March 2015. Next Rally: April 12-16 at Betabel RV Park in San Juan Bautista, CA. Notice that this rally is an abnormal Sunday to Thursday schedule. Following the rally, some members will caravan to the District 12 Cali-Rally near Santa Margarita, CA.
